Benefits
ADSL has many benefits that you may or may not be already aware of.
Some of the more important benefits we believe everyone should be aware
of are:
High
speed Internet access
ADSL is able to provide speeds 5 to 30 times faster than a standard
modem. That means no more waiting hours but rather minutes when downloading
huge documents, games, music and video files. It also means that you
will be able to take advantage of high quality real-time music and video
streaming that just aren't possible with a standard modem.
Always
on (permanent) Internet access
Once you have ADSL activated on your telephone line you then have a
permanent connection to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Experience trouble free Internet access with no disconnections or drop-offs.
You can chat for as long as you want without losing your connection,
you can download large files without the fear of being disconnected
part way through and having to start all over again.
No
call charges
As you are permanently connected to the Internet, there are no call
charges each time you want to use the Internet. This can mean considerable
savings on your phone bill. Just think of all the times you currently
have to dial-up to the internet daily, and think how much you'll save
never having to pay these call charges again. If you are currently dialling
into the Internet merely three times a day, you will save over $15 a
month in call charges alone.
No
need for a second telephone line
Many people today have installed a second telephone line in their house
purely dedicated for the Internet. These people are having to pay two
line rental charges every month to guarantee uninterrupted Internet
access and the ability to make or receive calls while remaining connected
to the internet. With ADSL there is no need for a second line as both
services will share the single line, saving you a minimum of $20 a month
in rental charges.
No
additional cabling or rental fees
As ADSL runs seamlessly on top of your existing telephone line and there
is no additional line rental charges associated to the ADSL service.
There is also no need for additional cabling into your house - no holes
in the wall or roof, no trenches in the lawn or garden and no hassles
for those in rental properties - everything required for ADSL is usually
already installed in your house!
Coverage
Optraweb ADSL is currently available in most metro and large regional
areas throughout Western Australia with new areas constantly being ADSL
enabled. The access speed and availability is dependent upon physical
factors such as your distance from the exchange and the condition of
the copper wires, in some cases only speeds of 256k/64k or 512k/128k
are available. We plan to extend our ADSL coverage to all capital cities
and large regional areas throughout Australia.
To
find out if your area is currently ADSL enabled you can use
Telstra's online utility.
How
Does It Work
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) uses one standard copper telephone
line (twisted pair cable) to transmit both Internet data and voice calls
simultaneously, without degrading the quality of either service. Essentially
ADSL technology accomplishes this feat by utilizing different frequency
ranges over the copper cable. Your standard voice telephone service
uses the frequency spectrum between 0kHz and 4kHz and data is transmitted
using the frequency spectrum between 20kHz and 2.2MHz. A frequency splitter
at both ends of the cable makes sure that the data and telephone information
go to the right places (see image below).
